How Superior is Superior Wisconsin? LOTS!!!

by Sarah

How Superior is Superior Wisconsin Featured Image

WOW! From Wisconsin Point to Billings Park to Sweeden Sweets candy shop, the city of Superior Wisconsin lives up to its name.I was able to visit that lovely area because we went there on a family mission trip sponsored by YouthWorks. We stayed at Zion Lutheran Church. (I admit, even I couldn't resist the fact that Culver's was RIGHT NEXT DOOR!) During the day, we helped at Catholic Charities where we weeded and planted flowers for one of their residential sites. We also visited the Golden Living Senior Center. There we passed out snacks, played piano for the residents, and helped with the weekly Yahtzee tournament. (the winner gets a whole dollar!) Anyway, it was really fun. At Zion took turns with general chores and even we made our meals, including spaghetti, pulled pork, and mac `n cheese. In the evenings he had Family devotion time at Wisconsin Point one night and dinner at Billings park another. That was a time for us to focus on why we were serving others and our … [Read more...]

Amazon’s Annedroids – a STEM Treasure Trove

by Dannelle

I will be the first to admit - we rarely watch television. It is hard to find decent shows for Miss Sarah that have a strong female role model. That is why it was such a treat to learn more about the Emmy nominated series on Amazon called Annedroids that also has a serious STEM curriculum with every episode. We were totally oblivious to this educational treat as we pretty much stopped watching television after Miss Sarah aged out of the shows featured on PBS. There are many reasons behind it; my husband works for a local affiliate so it often seems like going to work if he has the TV on, there are  many more things we could be doing instead of vegging out in front of a lousy show, the simple fact that a lot of the shows are lousy. I am not in favor of Miss Sarah watching a show that glorifies kids who don't respect adults, snarky language or even adult themes. I was treated to advanced views of the upcoming season and was rapidly squeezed out of my chair by Miss Sarah. She … [Read more...]

EZ Grip Balls Survive Girl Scouts

by Sarah

EZ Grip Balls Featured Image

Disclaimer: We were sent a set of EZ Grip Balls to try; all thoughts are entirely our own. For many months now, my family and I have been frozen to the bone. While some states experienced a rather mild winter, here in my hometown, it's been nonstop freezing temperatures and snow. When Jimmy, the groundhog, predicted an early spring it seemed too good to be true. Were we going to see a thaw in the frozen ground and experience the sun again? As it turned out, yes, we would! It has been a slow thaw, but spring has arrived. (Yes, it snows in May in Wisconsin !) We're still experiencing cooler temperatures than we'd like and are super jealous of southern states who are rejoicing in summer weather but I know we'll get there soon. It's only a matter of time before summer weather starts streaming in. Of course until then we're still stuck in doors for most of the day but thankfully for us we've been creative with the ways we've started keeping ourselves amused until the arrival of summer. … [Read more...]

Knot A Quilt? It is Now!

by Sarah

AlexBrands Knot A Quilt Featured Image

Disclaimer: I was sent Knot A Quilt from Alex Brands for purposes of review. All thoughts are entirely my own and I dare you to try and pry the new "blankie" out of my hands... OK, time for me to fess up: I still sleep with my baby blanket. You would too as it is soft, fleecy and uber-warm! I am still vertically challenged enough that it covers my whole body while I am stretched out...and yes, my Mom has to sneak it out of my room to wash. I think that soft, fleecy and uber-warm feel is what I like the most about the Knot-A-Quilt kit. I pulled the pre-cut squares out of the package and let them run through my fingers as I delighted in the multiple colors and fun prints. I couldn't wait to get started! I laid them out on the floor until I was happy with the design and then got to work tying knots in the pre-cut stripped edges. I quickly pieced it together well enough that I could take it with me in the car and finish it off. SUPER easy to assemble -- you don't have to be … [Read more...]

Kuhn Rikon KinderKitchen Essentials Set = STEAM in Action

by Ann McGrath

Kuhn Rikon KinderKitchen Essentials Featured Image

Disclosure: We received a set of Kuhn Rikon KinderKitchen Essentials for review, all thoughts are entirely our own. I love cooking with my daughter. There’s something so fun and satisfying about spending time together in the kitchen and preparing a meal.  More than that, there are so many benefits to teaching your kids to cook.  Not only does it set them up to have healthy eating habits for life, but cooking is the perfect STEAM learning activity, combining science, math, and creativity.  I have found that when my daughter cooks with me, she is much more adventurous about trying new foods and is much more willing to eat a meal that she made. I jumped at the chance to review Kuhn Rikon Kinderkitchen Essentials Knife Set.  Kuhn Rikon is a family owned Swiss company that has been in business for over 80 years, which certainly speaks to the quality and utility of their products.  The Kinderkitchen Essentials set is no exception and did not let me down. First of all, … [Read more...]

Camp Invention- Why you NEED to go

by Sarah

Camp invention Featured Image

Camp Invention is my first thing on my bucket list this summer and by far my favorite. My kindergarten teacher (LOVE HER!) told my mom ab0ut it when she was my teacher. We traveled back and forth to Verona each day that week so I could attend and my mom was a helper volunteer for the discount. Not only was Camp Invention totally fun, I learned so much! Bonus: they give all campers a T-shirt as part of the registration cost. I simply love the creativity, planning and support that goes into it. It is incredible and you can create anything you want. I made a doll, control panel, fur color changer, golf set (complete with a smiling golf ball) and about a million other things. I don't want you to think that it's all just building things with recyclable materials, there is an actual curriculum planned out each year with actual STEM concepts involved. Created by the National Inventors Hall of Fame, Camp Invention is the only nationally recognized summer program focused on … [Read more...]
