Let’s Take a Brain Break

by Sarah

Let's take a brain break

A brain break is doing something for about one minute that does not include any thinking. For example, some people do jumping jacks, others say the alphabet song, and some even just close their eyes. How many times have you sat your child down to practice his or her times' tables? Or asked them to write out a few pages of text because they are so good at it? These kinds of activities can be difficult on children's brains if they are done too much, especially after school where their brains need time to recharge. If kids are made to think too much before bedtime it can make it harder for them to fall asleep. However, there are plenty of other things that kids can do instead of arithmetic problems or writing. A brain break, on the other hand, is a great brain exercise. The mental and physical activity involved helps kids feel tired and relaxed at the end of it rather than frustrated or anxious. As well as helping children to relax and recharge, brain breaks can help them … [Read more...]

by Sarah

calm

If it is one thing we learned from a global pandemic it is the simple fact that it was very difficult for the kids - older kids especially. It was constantly on the news about how many people were infected and how many were dying. Everyone was worried about it. They had a hard time with the loss of "normal" activities, and even 1/3 of the kids in the US failed at distance learning. It was even worse for those who lost a loved one due to the pandemic or a related cause. This tough time led to a lot of anxiety and stress. If you noticed even your young children dealing with big emotions, having angry outbursts, and in general bad behavior? That … [Read more...]

by Dannelle

Talking to Tweens About Social Media Use? You may not like it but while you are reading this article, chances are your kid is obsessing over Instagram. If you ever thought that speaking to a child about social media is not really required until he/she reaches teenage years, then you need to think again. Although kids less than 13 years of age are not technically allowed to use the popular social media sites like Instagram, there are many kids who are actually working around the system. There are quite a large number of children who are using fake birthdays and email address of their parents to open accounts in the popular social media sites. There is a very disturbing trend that has come to light in recent years - children nowadays converse more on topics like who posted what and when in Facebook. This is indeed scary! by Dannelle

talking to tweens about dating

Talking to Tweens About Dating? The age group of 8 to 12 years also known as ‘tween’ is a delicate period for all children and the parents. This is the time when children are introduced to the concept of dating and sex. Nowadays when children ask permission about dating, parents have a habit of giving a straight ‘YES’. The parents need to understand that they must seek the truth underlying such requests. If you ask 50 tweens the definition of dating, you will get 50 different answers. One needs to ask them what exactly they mean by dating and why they want to go on a date. These initial discussions will ultimately grow into critical discussions as the children grow into fine young adults. The good news is that tweens are also very eager to have a chat with their parents. Believe it or not, kids still value the opinions of their parents and rely a great them on them for advice. So the parents need to come closer to the kids and lay the groundwork for a healthy relationship during the … [Read more...]
