STEM Life with a nine-year-old college student

Amazon’s Annedroids – a STEM Treasure Trove

by Dannelle

I will be the first to admit – we rarely watch television. It is hard to find decent shows for Miss Sarah that have a strong female role model. That is why it was such a treat to learn more about the Emmy nominated series on Amazon called Annedroids that also has a serious STEM curriculum with every episode.

Annedroids on Amazon Operation 40k

We were totally oblivious to this educational treat as we pretty much stopped watching television after Miss Sarah aged out of the shows featured on PBS. There are many reasons behind it; my husband works for a local affiliate so it often seems like going to work if he has the TV on, there are  many more things we could be doing instead of vegging out in front of a lousy show, the simple fact that a lot of the shows are lousy. I am not in favor of Miss Sarah watching a show that glorifies kids who don’t respect adults, snarky language or even adult themes.

I was treated to advanced views of the upcoming season and was rapidly squeezed out of my chair by Miss Sarah. She was enthralled by  the characters of Annedroids, it’s premise and mini science lesson in each episode. Insects, technology, you name it – she was totally sucked in! She actually watched every episode I was granted a sneak peak of and then started to pout that there was nothing more to watch.

Things we liked:

It is OK to be “girly”. It doesn’t mean that you aren’t smart if you like flowers, hearts, rainbows and glitter. Just look at that bedroom!

Parent involvement. We are firm believers in being an active part of Miss Sarah’s learning team. Kids learn through play and whom other than a child’s parents can help make everything a learning experience?

Annedroids Post Pic 2 Junkyard

The Junkyard. In Camp Invention we learned not to call it “garbage” or “recyclable materials” but Up-Cycle items. This is a literal trash-to-treasure concept where they creatively invent new items from their giant up-cycle item stock pile.  It fosters creative thinking, trial and error problem solving and so much more!Annedroids Post PIc 1

Season 3 is just around the corner, starting tomorrow, Friday June 24th! The three buddies, Anne, Nick and Shania treat us to a batch of new adventures and challenges – while Nick is banned from the junkyard by his mom, Anne upgrades the junkyard security and Shania tries her best to help things return to normal. Add a few new faces and some surprises with Pal and it will be the best season yet!

Miss Sarah is looking forward to being able to see all of the season and in order. I have mentioned the perks of Amazon Prime before and streaming video is right at the top of the list! Your family can enjoy the entire Annedroids series (including the first two seasons) for FREE when if you are a Prime member.
