WOW! From Wisconsin Point to Billings Park to Sweeden Sweets candy shop, the city of Superior Wisconsin lives up to its name.I was able to visit that lovely area because we went there on a family mission trip sponsored by YouthWorks. We stayed at Zion Lutheran Church. (I admit, even I couldn't resist the fact that Culver's was RIGHT NEXT DOOR!) During the day, we helped at Catholic Charities where we weeded and planted flowers for one of their residential sites. We also visited the Golden Living Senior Center. There we passed out snacks, played piano for the residents, and helped with the weekly Yahtzee tournament. (the winner gets a whole dollar!) Anyway, it was really fun. At Zion took turns with general chores and even we made our meals, including spaghetti, pulled pork, and mac `n cheese. In the evenings he had Family devotion time at Wisconsin Point one night and dinner at Billings park another. That was a time for us to focus on why we were serving others and our … [Read more...]
Amazon’s Annedroids – a STEM Treasure Trove
I will be the first to admit - we rarely watch television. It is hard to find decent shows for Miss Sarah that have a strong female role model. That is why it was such a treat to learn more about the Emmy nominated series on Amazon called Annedroids that also has a serious STEM curriculum with every episode. We were totally oblivious to this educational treat as we pretty much stopped watching television after Miss Sarah aged out of the shows featured on PBS. There are many reasons behind it; my husband works for a local affiliate so it often seems like going to work if he has the TV on, there are many more things we could be doing instead of vegging out in front of a lousy show, the simple fact that a lot of the shows are lousy. I am not in favor of Miss Sarah watching a show that glorifies kids who don't respect adults, snarky language or even adult themes. I was treated to advanced views of the upcoming season and was rapidly squeezed out of my chair by Miss Sarah. She … [Read more...]
