Pete’s Dragon Movie Activity Fun!

by Sarah

Pete's Dragon Movie Activity Fun Featured Image

My Mom got to see Pete's Dragon Movie in LA before it came out in theaters, and she LOVED the reboot of the Disney classic. That is why we are sharing the official Disney Pete's Dragon Movie Activity Booklet with you - to have some fun with your furry green friend. Pete's Dragon: Mr. Meacham (Robert Redford), a woodcarver, delights local children with stories of a mysterious dragon that lives deep in the woods of the Pacific Northwest. His daughter Grace (Bryce Dallas Howard) believes these are just tall tales, until she meets Pete (Oakes Fegley), a 10-year-old orphan who says he lives in the woods with a giant, friendly dragon. With help from a young girl named Natalie (Oona Laurence), Grace sets out to investigate if this fantastic claim can be true. I get a kick out of what this reviewer had to say: Despite the vastly improved visuals, the new film is just as soft-hearted — and, unfortunately, just as mush-headed — as the earlier one. He is right, I saw the … [Read more...]

Tenement Museum Sheds Light on Immigrant’s Lives

Tenement Museum Sheds Light on Immigrant's Lives Featured Image

Can you imagine being only 6 years old and having to take care of your 3 younger siblings and one of them is sick? How about being a parent of 4 and your husband disappears? Maybe you have to figure out a way to help your family and you weren't a legal resident of the United States? All these scenarios came to life for us during the Hard Times tour of the Tenement Museum on the lower east side of New York City. Home to over 7,000 people, the building that has been partially restored and turned into a museum, was an incredible insight for family lives of those newly arrived to our country 100 years ago plus. Photo Credit: Courtesy of the Lower East Side Tenement Museum Where a row of houses originally stood, and had been divided up so 3-5 families could live in each one, became a series of tenements. These newer buildings took up the same space as the old houses but could easily house 20+ families in a series of 3 room "apartments. Photo Credit: Courtesy of the Lower East … [Read more...]

Cool Moon Phases Trading Cards

by Sarah

Cool Moon Phases Featured Image

I have talked about trading cards before and how they are a great way for teaching the kids! In the summer, the moon is such an accessible STEM item to study as you can see it almost every night. This will let your littles teach the cool moon phases cycle, see the changes and - if you have a telescope, you should encourage them to use it. One thing I thank my parents for (in a list of many things) is that I have a killer telescope. The last eclipse was on a school night but I was allowed to stay up past midnight and watch it! I was totally amazed at how fast the Earth rotates as I had to keep readjusting the tracking focus keep it in my sight. Do not get hung up on the details on the cards and think your kids can’t understand them. 3-year-olds can recite the states and capitals, if someone simply took the time to teach them! It is just amazing what little brains are capable of learning. Something like these Moon Phases Free Printable Learning Cards are great to help you keep … [Read more...]

Girl Scouts Day at the Capitol

by Sarah

Girl Scouts Day Featured Image

One thing I love about Girl Scouts is the simple fact that they have a TON Of great programs that you can do either as a troop or by yourself. The Girl Scouts Day at the Capitol is a great example of that -- and was a ton of fun! Girl Scouts Day at the Capitol Show your Girl Scout pride and interest in citizenship as we spend a day at the Capitol. Meet women from our Legislature and hear why they chose this path- of representing us! When you are NOT with your troop - you tend to meet other great girls and create new friendships! That happened to me - I met and made friends with a gal who has the same goofy humor as I do. As part of Girl Scouts Day, we got a behind-the-scenes tour of the beautiful building and even met a few representatives, so we actually met all the qualifications to earn the Inside Government Patch! Here we are deciding how we plan to vote for the proposed motion.. It was a fun day and I really learned a lot about our local government - perfect … [Read more...]
