In the United States, more scientists are needed because of the considerable gap that is growing between the US and the rest of the world in terms of scientific abilities. Children, particularly girls, need to be encouraged at a young age to take up science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) subjects. According to Pew Research, America is nearing the bottom in terms of rank in relation to the 35 most developed countries in the world in STEM. In particular, math scores have plummeted in recent years. The study (see link) shows that 38% of high school students are operating at the lowest level of math achievement. http://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2017/02/15/u-s-students-internationally-math-science/ When asked to rate STEM education in the US, 46% of scientists stated that it was below average. What’s Holding Kids Back? One explanation is that US education has become so focused on exams and rote learning that the natural curiosity of children is being … [Read more...]

Tips for Encouraging Girls to Get into Science
Statistics show that women in the U.S. receive fewer than 20% of Bachelor's degrees in computer science, engineering and physics. They are not greatly represented in the other sciences either, nor in math. Educationalists are eagerly looking for ways to bridge this gap. But we need to understand the reasons for it in order to solve the problem and come up with effective ways to drive change. Then we need to come up with ways of Encouraging Girls to Get into Science. Below are eight ways of encouraging girls to get into science: 1. Positive Attitudes to Girls in Science and Math Electives As students move up from elementary school to middle and high school, they have a number of choices of what to take. Girls tend to be pushed into arts subjects and don’t always get a chance to do chemistry or physics. If there is an accelerated program for math and science, they often get passed over, even when their grades are as good if not better than the boys. 2. Positive … [Read more...]

5 Tips for Raising Your GPA
Is your GPA not quite where you are hoping it would be? Maybe you have slacked off a bit in school with your grades and it has made your GPA drop a little lower than it probably should have, or maybe you are working hard but you just want to push yourself to new limits and want to bring up that GPA just a little bit more to reach it's full potential. If you have trouble paying attention in class, try sitting up front and being closer to where everything is going on. 2. Participate in Class: Participating in class is key to … [Read more...]
