I know that 1 Minute Math Addition for first graders seems like a strange concept. While timed math tests are not mentioned in the curriculum guide for your kid's school, they are a way for teachers to find out if their students have mastered basic math facts. This is very important today when teachers and schools are expected to have students meet certain standards. If your child had been able to complete the 20 problems in one minute, they would have demonstrated that they had a mastery of the facts on the timed test. A child is considered to have learned a math fact when they can give an answer in less than 3 seconds. Sadly, these timed tests can cause students a lot of anxiety. That is the main reason that I feel it is important to help them in advance of them needing the school lesson. Making it fun and some sort of game means you can help them learn and take away the anxiety! The transition from kindergarten to first grade is a big step for a child. A child is now … [Read more...]

How to Help Your Talented and Gifted Child
**Note: this article has been modified after a message from Keith Nerby, the principal of the Sun Prairie High School. It was the PRIOR principal we had an issue with, and I had mentioned that to Mr Nerby when we had a meeting about Sarah in May of this year. I am sorry if this blew back onto him, as he is not the person I had the unfortunate phone conversation with several years ago. Your precious peanut is brilliant, thinks every parent ever. The reality? Less than 5% of them actually end up in a TAG or ALP program at their school. Even then, there is a series of problems that arise, and many variables occur. That leads to two different philosophies of parenting. How can you best help your talented and gifted child? My Talented and Gifted Child Story Miss Sarah was the kid who could read Moby Dick entering kindergarten and understand it. This didn't surprise us as she also knew her states and capitals, could speak basic phrases in both French and Spanish, had half the … [Read more...]
Talking to Tweens About Bullying
Talking to Tweens About Bullying? It's been all over the news this year in middle schools and Junior high schools. Parent groups are forming, community-wide anti-bullying task forces, and more. Anti-bullying ordinances are being voted on by local governments, and school handbooks have been rewritten. Bullying is a very common problem that affects the youth of all age groups, and it can harm any student. Bullying is so dangerous that it affects the social and emotional well-being of a student, and even the overall physical health is affected. There is also a rise in the evidence that proves that bullying is somehow linked to sexual harassment and dating violence. Talking to Tweens about Bullying I know it is nothing new - bullying has been around for a long time, but here is the thing? When we were kids? There was no social media. The school yard bully was out of the picture for the 16 hours a day that we were at home with our family and friends. Now? Kids deal with it 24 … [Read more...]

Hatchet Lesson Plan For Kids
I came up with a Hatchet Lesson Plan For Kids because I just loved this story! In the book Hatchet by Gary Paulsen, we meet 13-year-old Brian Robeson as he heads to visit his father in the Canadian mountains. On the way, he survives a horrible plane crash and is left as the only survivor who now needs to survive alone in the wilderness. So, how will he fare? Enjoy Gary Paulsen’s story of Hatchet with your child, then consider some of the Hatchet-themed lesson plans and enrichment activities below. Not only can they help you expand on the themes in the story, but they can teach some basic educational concepts in the process. Here is how to get started: Rules of Survival Hatchet Craft: Brian quickly learns that there are specific rules you must follow when trying to survive in the wild. Talk about these rules, and then create this hatchet craft below so you can reflect on these rules. Here is what you will need to create this craft: - brown, grey, and/or black craft … [Read more...]
