How to Make a Rain Cloud in a Jar

by Sarah

How to Make a Rain Cloud in a Jar Featured Image

The simple things are often the most fun to do! When I wrote the book: My First Hurricane, I wanted to help educate kids on basic weather concepts. This How to Make a Rain Cloud in a Jar is a GREAT way to teach a visual on simple weather for the littles and can help them understand the storms a little better. I am a firm believer that when you understand something, you are less likely to be afraid of it! How to Make a Rain Cloud in a Jar Supplies needed:- clear glass mason jar- regular white foamy shaving cream, do not use gel- blue food coloring (or color of your choice)- toothpick Directions: 1. Begin by filling your mason jar 3/4 of the way full with cold water. You need to use cold and not warm or room temp since that will melt the shaving cream.2. Add the shaving cream to the top of the water. Fill it up 1/4 of the way so the jar is now full. 3. Add a few drops of food coloring to the top of the shaving cream. You will need to give it a little time to soak … [Read more...]

Fun Holiday Craft Ideas for Kids Featured Image

STEM is usually the buzz word for the idea of spurring kids on in their education. STEAM became the new buzz word as the "experts" realized that art was necessary too. STREAM is the most recent, with the addition of robotics. OIY! It can be hard to keep it all straight! These Fun Holiday Craft Ideas for Kids are great for helping kids take a break from STEM activities and delve into the art area. Fun Holiday Craft Ideas for Kids These different ideas have mostly to do with holiday ornaments, but a few are easy gift giving ideas. ornaments can be used in more ways than just on a tree: they can be used as gift toppers, or you can even just display them in a bowl. Sock Snowman They are adorable and a great use for those extra socks that we all have around the laundry room. The best part? IT takes 15 minute or less. Popsicle Stick Tree Ornaments These delightfully colorful and glitzy glitter covered modern Christmas tree ornaments made from humble popsicle sticks would … [Read more...]

Talking to Tweens About Dating

Talking to Tweens About Dating Featured Image

Talking to Tweens About Dating? The age group of 8 to 12 years also known as ‘tween’ is a delicate period for all children and the parents. This is the time when children are introduced to the concept of dating and sex. Nowadays, when children ask permission about dating, parents have a habit of giving a straight ‘YES’. The parents need to understand that they must seek the truth underlying such requests. If you ask 50 tweens the definition of dating, you will get 50 different answers. One needs to ask them what exactly they mean by dating and why they want to go on a date. These initial discussions will ultimately grow into critical discussions as the children grow into fine young adults. The good news is that tweens are also very eager to have a chat with their parents. Believe it or not, kids still value the opinions of their parents and rely on them a great them for advice. So the parents need to come closer to the kids and lay the groundwork for a healthy relationship … [Read more...]

The Boy in the Striped Pajamas Study Unit and Character Compare and Contrast

by Sarah

The Boy in the Striped Pajamas Study Unit Featured Image

The Boy in the Striped Pajamas Study Unit and Character Compare and Contrast is perfect for anyone soon to enter 7th grade. The Boy in the Striped Pajamas by John Boyne is a tale about a young boy named Bruno lives with his parents in World War II-era Berlin. He moves with his family right outside of Auschwitz when his father is promoted as a commander, where Bruno meets a young concentration camp prisoner named Schmuel. The two become friends, with Bruno never quite realizing who or what Schmuel is. The story follows their friendship and eventually their search for Schmuel’s dad, which ends with heartbreak. This gem is pretty much standard in 7th-grade curriculum, whether they cover it in English class or Social Studies.     This story can teach kids a great deal about the Nazi invasion during WWII, the life and death scenarios, and how the war affected children from all walks of life. Read the text with your child, then give these activities to help further their … [Read more...]

Talking to Tweens About Suicide

by Dannelle

Talking to Tweens about Suicide Featured Image

Talking to Tweens About Suicide? I didn't think I would have to do this until TWO of Miss Sarah's schoolmates attempted it last year. One was a result of bullying, the other was depression from family issues. In the modern world, many lives are, unfortunately, touched by suicide. As a parent, you may want to hide the meaning of death from your tween, but in reality, this is not possible in this age of social media. If you are a parent and have heard the news of a much-publicized suicide, then chances are that your child has also heard the news. There is no denying the fact that tweens will have their reactions and feelings. But since they have less experience, compared to adults, in processing distressing news they need to be helped by a responsible and informed parent. You can start a conversation with your tween after a publicized suicide in the media. Having said that, a parent need not wait for any tragic news to start this all-important conversation. However, these sad … [Read more...]

1 Minute Math Addition for First Graders

by Sarah

1 Minute Math Addition for First Graders Featured Image

I know that 1 Minute Math Addition for first graders seems like a strange concept. While timed math tests are not mentioned in the curriculum guide for your kid's school, they are a way for teachers to find out if their students have mastered basic math facts. This is very important today when teachers and schools are expected to have students meet certain standards. If your child had been able to complete the 20 problems in one minute, they would have demonstrated that they had a mastery of the facts on the timed test. A child is considered to have learned a math fact when they can give an answer in less than 3 seconds. Sadly, these timed tests can cause students a lot of anxiety. That is the main reason that I feel it is important to help them in advance of them needing the school lesson. Making it fun and some sort of game means you can help them learn and take away the anxiety! The transition from kindergarten to first grade is a big step for a child. A child is now … [Read more...]
