Statistics show that women in the U.S. receive fewer than 20% of Bachelor's degrees in computer science, engineering and physics. They are not greatly represented in the other sciences either, nor in math. Educationalists are eagerly looking for ways to bridge this gap. But we need to understand the reasons for it in order to solve the problem and come up with effective ways to drive change. Then we need to come up with ways of Encouraging Girls to Get into Science. Below are eight ways of encouraging girls to get into science: 1. Positive Attitudes to Girls in Science and Math Electives As students move up from elementary school to middle and high school, they have a number of choices of what to take. Careers in computer science and engineering fields currently outnumber the individuals qualified to take the on, and these opportunities are only growing. It’s time to help our kids learn how to code online. Check out these resources for kids. Code.org When you talk about coding, the first place to go is Code.org. Their motto is, “anybody can learn,” and the site makes it easy. Hour of Code is a great place to start. Each year, students, teachers, and parents can register to have their students go through an hour of introductory computer science. Don’t want to wait for the Hour of Code date? Go through any of the hour (or more) activities to learn basic coding from creating games to animation, JavaScript, and more!
