What I Did on My Summer Vacation

by Sarah

What I Did on My Summer Vacation Featured Image

I can safely say this is the best summer I’ve ever had. Here’s just a few of the things I did on My Summer Vacation:   Camp Invention-I was a Counselor In Training at Camp Invention for a week, along with two of my friends. It was great to get to work with all the little kids, and I had a lot of fun teaching them new things. Junior Scholar Institute-JSI is a wonderful program in Iowa where kids in grades 6-8 stay in the college dorms for a week while taking a class of their choice. It was a great feeling like a "real" college student! I took the Japanese course and had a lot of fun. I also made many friends during the week. Bethel Horizons: Rock and River-This camp wasn’t quite as fun as the others (I had a panic attack after almost falling off a high rocky hill), but I still enjoyed myself. We went canoeing on the Wisconsin River, then stayed overnight on a sandbar. We went rock climbing at Devil’s Lake (where I almost fell). It was a pretty good week, and I met the … [Read more...]

Extreme Weather is Extreme Fun! Featured Image

Engaging a child’s mind while they play can be challenging! Extreme Weather from Discovery Kids makes it easy to get your kids learning while they play. Let your kids have a hands on learning experience, all while being educated about extreme weather scenarios with these kits from Discovery Kids! Obviously, it’s not safe, nor is it the desire of any parent, to put their child at risk of danger by taking them to actual extreme weather situations in order for them to have a hands on experience in the name of science and education! With these kits, you don’t have to leave the comfort of your own home, or even make a big mess, to see a realistic scale of the damages and intensity of extreme weather! These kits are awesome, and allow you to see the differences in wind speed, how debris is effected and distributed in a storm, and more! If you want to make it even more fun, you can turn on the sound effects so they can hear what a storm would sound like, as well as see it! Learning … [Read more...]

Meet My Hero Writing Prompt Free Printable

Meet My Hero Writing Prompt Featured Image

One thing I learned when Sun Prairie Exploded, was the simple fact that a Hero comes in all different packages. It's not just the Marvel universe of characters or our first responders, it could very easily be the person sitting right next to you! My Meet My Hero Writing Prompt Free Printable came out of the fact that there were so many heros that day - all rushing to the scene to help, even my dad! We saw TV reporters helping move bedridden seniors down the street from the local senior center that was being evacuated from the fire "hot zone". We saw Moms and Dads jump in and help direct traffic or knock on doors to get people to safety. Local restaurant owners opened up their shops and whipped up meals for the Red Cross shelters. Kids had lemonade stands to raise money for the survivors. I could go on and on. This My Meet My Hero Writing Prompt Free Printable came out of the fact that there were so many heroes that day - all rushing to the scene to help, even my dad! is a … [Read more...]

Color By Shape Free Printable

Color By Shape Free Printable Featured Image

This Color By Shape exercise is a great way to not only teach the littles their shapes, but helps their manual dexterity with their coloring. That builds on their writing skills for down the road. Why is it important to learn shapes? Color and shape are ways children observe and categorize what they see. These very recognizable characteristics encourage children to define and organize the diverse world around them. These first teachings in preschool and kindergarten are basics that your child needs to know before she learns the "other basics" of reading, writing, and math. Understanding color and shape is a tool for learning many skills in all curriculum areas, from math and science to language and reading. For example, when your child learns to discern the similarities and differences between colors and shapes, she is using the same skills she needs to recognize the differences between letters and numerals. Now, do you have to explain all of that to your little one … [Read more...]
