STEM Life with a nine-year-old college student

KiwiCo

Most subscription boxes are designed to fit maybe one or two categories and if you don’t fit into those categories then it’s just not for you. When it comes to creativity and problem solving those are categories that apply to every person regardless of age.

KiwiCo recognized a need for more age-specific choices in a single subscription box and they seem to have nailed it! Their boxes go from 0-36 months, ages 3-4, ages 5-8, and ages 9-16+ with two different types of subscription boxes to choose from for their oldest users. You’ll find that their boxes are heavily STEM/STEAM themed and offer a wide variety of projects. We were lucky enough to try a few of their single crates:

The KiwiCo Light-Up Speaker box is recommended for ages 12+, but does fall within that 9-16+ box age range. In the kit, there was everything needed to make a fully functional light-up speaker. The goal is to teach users how to build an amplification circuit, learn about transistors, and see electromagnetism at work all while customizing your LED speaker light and getting it ready to play your favorite tunes.

Another 9-16+ single crate, the Hydraulic Claw, shows you just how often hydraulics are used in everyday life. You find them on airplanes, in factories, and even at theme parks! This kit includes all the pieces you’ll need to build your own hydraulic claw, ready to clamp and lift. It’s a great tinkering project to build to spec, then adjust and experiment with to yield different outcomes and designs.

The last single crate to make STEAM fun is the Infinity Mirror. Thanks to the light-up mirror and design you can see an infinity illusion for yourself. Think of it as abyss in the palm of your hands that you created and is crazy cool to look at!

KiwiCo is a fantastic subscription box, but what makes it worthwhile is the option to purchase single crates. There are more than just a couple of options when it comes to single crates, too.

You can purchase almost all the projects they release monthly as additions to your subscriptions or to get specific projects for yourself, your child, or your classroom. These crates were designed to be fun and to encourage everyone to bring out their inner creator!
