STEM Life with a nine-year-old college student

What I Did on My Summer Vacation

by Sarah

I can safely say this is the best summer I’ve ever had. Here’s just a few of the things I did on My Summer Vacation:

  • Camp Invention-
I was a Counselor In Training at Camp Invention for a week, along with two of my friends. It was great to get to work with all the little kids, and I had a lot of fun teaching them new things. What I Did on My Summer Vacation being a camp counselor was a great experience
  • Junior Scholar Institute-
JSI is a wonderful program in Iowa where kids in grades 6-8 stay in the college dorms for a week while taking a class of their choice. It was a great feeling like a “real” college student! I took the Japanese course and had a lot of fun. I also made many friends during the week.

  • Bethel Horizons: Rock and River-
This camp wasn’t quite as fun as the others (I had a panic attack after almost falling off a high rocky hill), but I still enjoyed myself. We went canoeing on the Wisconsin River, then stayed overnight on a sandbar. We went rock climbing at Devil’s Lake (where I almost fell). It was a pretty good week, and I met the requirements for almost all of the Girl Scout Primitive Camping Patches.
FYI: digging holes to do your business in? Overrated.
  • Robotic Operated Vehicle camp-
This camp was one of my favorites. I made a lot of friends, learned a lot about building ROVs, and got to tour a WWII submarine! We also went out on a research vessel for the afternoon with students from the University of Milwaukee. It was fun and a great STEM experience!
  • Girl Scouts: Tech Girls-
What I Did on My Summer Vacation we made stop animation films
This camp was second only to JSI. While I didn’t make a lot of friends, the friends I did make were really awesome, and that made up for it. On the first day, we made stop animation films, worked with a green screen, and programmed robots. The second day, we learned about photography and continued programming our robots. I had a lot of fun there and earned almost all of the Robotics Girl Scout Patches.

In between camps, I went camping with my family.

We have a pop-up gem, and it has been fun to try out different campgrounds, try new foods, and hike different areas. I also had sleepovers, hosted a child from Ukraine for a week, and caught up on my “fun” reading.

Me with Vlad

I had plenty of outdoor time, indoor time, time to lead, time to follow, time to work my brain, and time to connect with other great minds.

Overall, this has been an amazing summer vacation!
