Cool Moon Phases Trading Cards

by Sarah

I have talked about trading cards before and how they are a great way for teaching the kids! In the summer, the moon is such an accessible STEM item to study as you can see it almost every night. This will let your littles teach the cool moon phases cycle, see the changes and – if you have a telescope, you should encourage them to use it.

One thing I thank my parents for (in a list of many things) is that I have a killer telescope. The last eclipse was on a school night but I was allowed to stay up past midnight and watch it! I was totally amazed at how fast the Earth rotates as I had to keep readjusting the tracking focus keep it in my sight.

Do not get hung up on the details on the cards and think your kids can’t understand them. 3-year-olds can recite the states and capitals, if someone simply took the time to teach them! It is just amazing what little brains are capable of learning. Something like these Moon Phases Free Printable Learning Cards are great to help you keep the littles entertained while waiting for that food at a restaurant or even when waiting for your turn at the Dentist! There is no “downtime”, just time for quick learning opportunities that are just perfect if you are prepared! My mom always had a zippy bag in her purse that she called my “busy bag” – and changed it up often. You can do that too!

If you don’t have a telescope, borrow one — I guarantee you that it will be a great family activity!
