Best Science Movies The Whole Family Will Enjoy

by Dannelle

I am always excited to watch something that also encourages science and learning.  This list of best science movies is ideal for the entire family, and will also encourage STEM learning in your kids.  Not only do they have a fun movie night – but they will get excited about learning new scientific facts and ideas.

Check out our list of Best Science Movies The Whole Family Will Enjoy! Tons of great science friendly and family friendly features that are fun to watch!

Best Science Movies The Whole Family Will Enjoy

I love watching movies as a family, and any science movies that are also entertaining are perfect.  Most of these have an underlying science theme, while a few also have a theme focused on science fiction.  The bulk of these are educational and at least apply some science principals that will get your kid’s imaginations going.

Spare Parts:  This movie is based on a true story.  It’s a great tale of how 4 teenagers overcome odds to participate in a robotics competition.  There is a lot about working hard and also many technical aspects included that make this perfect for family viewing.

Earth To Echo:  This modern science fiction movie is a fun addition to the list since it includes some basic science facts, and really shows kids getting out there and exploring. While it may not all into the science movies category exactly, it is a super fun movie that gets kids creative.

War Games:  Every child of the 1980’s remembers this classic movie about how one computer geek accidentally created a scenario that could arm all missiles across the nation.  It’s a fun adventure in learning how computers work and just a cool movie that is a throwback to a different era in our nation.

The Explorers:  The Explorers was a right of passage in the 1980’s.  Not only did was this one of those science movies that explored outer space in a fun way, but it showed how kids can put their minds together and create something out of nothing.

October Sky:  The launching of Sputnik inspires a boy and his friends to build rockets.  Coming from a small coal mining town, this was a huge endeavor that met with multiple challenges.  It’s a great movie to include with a heart warming story and reminder that you should work hard to meet your goals.

Astronaut Farmer:  A farmer longs to reach his dreams of going to space.  This fun and inspiring movie is a ton of laughs, but also an encouragement to never give up on your dreams.

The Right Stuff:  This fun and slightly rough rendition of the story of the first astronauts is a great movie.  It does, however, contain a few adult humor situations.  It has a PG rating, but you may want to preview before viewing with younger audiences.

Apollo 13:  The mission to the moon that almost ended in disaster is a favorite into our list of science movies.  It’s a great way to learn more about this particular mission and to see how science works in emergency situations to utilize what you have on hand to fix a problem.

The Martian:  If you want one of the most beautiful features on the screen plus fun science and a bit of science fiction, look no further than The Martian.  This movie does, however, also include some adult themes with a PG-13 rating, so it may require a preview before viewing with children.

The Rocketeer: This fun look at rocketry is a great family friendly movie that easily falls into the science movies category.  Set in a time when science was just picking up steam, this is a perfect reminder to go for your dreams.

The Imitation Game:  Based on real life events, this is a science movie that focuses on programming and the puzzles and coding that happened during the world wars. It does have some adult themes with a PG-13 rating, so definitely worth a preview before watching with younger children.

Short Circuit:  Tons of fun is had in this classic movie about robots and how one in particular, got a little out of hand.  It is a fun look at potential artificial intelligence, robotics, and relationships.

This list of the best science movies your entire family will enjoy watching is perfect for grabbing to give as a gift, or simply adding to your family movie collection.  With science themes present in each of these movies, it’s a wonderful way to encourage your kids in learning and education while having fun.
